new paper,  just published 
Economics Letters, measures the "readability" of the introductions to papers published in the 
American Economic Review, and then shows that the most unreadable papers have fewer citations.
I never realized it was possible to objectively measure readability, but it seems not only does such a metric exist, but you can test the readability of your own introductions 
here.
